N'importe qui, n'importe quoi

N’importe qui, n’importe quoi, n’importe où, n’importe quand and n’importe quel express the idea of free choice or an unspecified person, thing, place or time.

N’importe qui

N’importe qui = an unspecified person, whoever it may be.

  • N’importe qui peut comprendre. (Anyone can understand.)
  • Tu peux inviter n’importe qui. (You can invite anyone.)

N’importe quoi

N’importe quoi = an unspecified thing, whatever it may be.

  • Tu peux choisir n’importe quoi. (You can choose anything.)
  • Il mange n’importe quoi. (He eats anything.)

N’importe où

N’importe où = an unspecified place, wherever it may be.

  • Tu peux t’asseoir n’importe où. (You can sit anywhere.)
  • Je peux travailler n’importe où. (I can work anywhere.)

N’importe quand

N’importe quand = an unspecified time, whenever it may be.

  • Tu peux venir n’importe quand. (You can come anytime.)
  • Appelle-moi n’importe quand. (Call me anytime.)

N’importe quel

N’importe quel + noun = a person or thing among all possibilities, whichever it may be.

  • Tu peux choisir n’importe quel livre. (You can choose any book.)
  • Nous pouvons prendre n’importe quel bus. (We can take any bus.)

Quel agrees with the noun:

  • n’importe quel livre
  • n’importe quelle voiture
  • n’importe quels livres
  • n’importe quelles chaussures

Two possible meanings

Depending on the context, some of these expressions can have a neutral or negative meaning.

  • neutral meaning: free choice → Tu peux prendre n’importe quoi. (You can take anything.)
  • negative meaning: without care or thought → Il fait n’importe quoi. (He does nonsense.)
