A1.2 Formation of Regular First Group Verbs in the Present Tense

Regular verbs of the first group in French are those that end in -er in the infinitive, except for the verb aller. In the present indicative tense, the conjugation of these verbs follows a regular pattern.

Stems and endings

The stem of a verb is the part that remains after removing the -er ending from the infinitive. To this stem, we add the endings of the present indicative tense:

  • je -e
  • tu -es
  • il/elle -e
  • nous -ons
  • vous -ez
  • ils/elles -ent

  • Parler : je parle , tu parles , il/elle parle , nous parlons , vous parlez , ils/elles parlent

  • Aimer : j'aime , tu aimes , il/elle aime , nous aimons , vous aimez , ils/elles aiment

  • Travailler : je travaille , tu travailles , il/elle travaille , nous travaillons , vous travaillez , ils/elles travaillent
