Irregular Forms of the Imperative

Some French verbs have irregular forms in the imperative. You simply have to memorize them!

To be (Être)

  • Soyons (nous)
  • Sois (tu)
  • Soyez (vous)

To have (Avoir)

  • Ayons (nous)
  • Aie (tu)
  • Ayez (vous)

To know (Savoir)

  • Sachons (nous)
  • Sache (tu)
  • Sachez (vous)

To want (Vouloir)

Note: "Vouloir" is rarely used in the imperative, but it can be in some expressions to express a wish or polite request, primarily in the form "Veuillez".

  • Veuillez (vous)

Usage Examples

  • To be (Être): Sois prudent ! (Be careful!)
  • To have (Avoir): Ayez confiance en vous. (Have confidence in yourself.)
  • To know (Savoir): Sachons apprécier les petits plaisirs. (Let’s appreciate the small pleasures.)
  • To want (Vouloir): Veuillez fermer la porte. (Please close the door.)
