Demonstrative Pronouns: Celui, Celle, Ceux, Celles

Demonstrative pronouns designate, specify, or distinguish people or things. They agree in gender and number with the noun to which they refer.

Examples

There are four forms: celui (masculine singular), celle (feminine singular), ceux (masculine plural), celles (feminine plural).

  • - Tu choisis quel pantalon ? (- Which pants are you choosing?)
    - Je choisis celui-ci, le bleu à 35 euros. (- I'm choosing these, the blue ones for 35 euros.)
  • - Quelle entrée tu as pris finalement ? (- Which starter did you take in the end?)
    - J’ai choisi celle que tu m'as recommandée, l’œuf dur mayonnaise. (- I chose the one you recommended, the hard-boiled egg with mayonnaise.)
  • - Le professeur a parlé de l’examen ? (- Did the teacher talk about the exam?)
    - Oui, ceux qui arrivent en retard ne seront pas admis dans la salle. Fais attention demain ! (- Yes, those who arrive late will not be admitted into the room. Be careful tomorrow!)
  • - Tu as vu des chemises dans ce magasin ? (- Did you see any shirts in this store?)
    - Oui, celles que j'ai vues étaient très belles, mais chères. (- Yes, the ones I saw were very beautiful, but expensive.)
