ne...que (only)

Expresses a limitation or restriction.

  • Je ne mange que des légumes. (I only eat vegetables.)
  • Il ne parle que l'anglais. (He only speaks English.)
  • Elle ne lit que le soir. (She only reads in the evening.)

ne...rien

Indicates the total absence of objects or actions.

  • Je ne vois rien. (I see nothing.)
  • Il ne se passe rien d'intéressant. (Nothing interesting is happening.)
  • Nous n'avons rien compris. (We understood nothing.)

ne...personne

Means that no one is involved or present.

  • Je ne vois personne. (I see no one.)
  • Il n'a invité personne. (He invited no one.)
  • Elle ne critique personne. (She criticizes no one.)

ne...nulle part

Expresses the absence of a place or position.

  • Je ne vais nulle part ce week-end. (I'm not going anywhere this weekend.)
  • Il n'a trouvé ses clés nulle part. (He didn't find his keys anywhere.)
  • Nous ne l'avons vu nulle part. (We didn't see him anywhere.)
