A1.1 Plural Agreement

General Agreement Rules

To mark the plural, an -s is generally added to the end of singular nouns and adjectives. However, if the word already ends with an -s, -x, or -z, its form does not change in the plural.

  • Un chat → des chats (A cat → cats)
  • Petit → petits (Small → small ones)
  • Un petit chat → des petits chats (A small cat → small cats)

Case of nouns ending in -eu, -au, -eau

For nouns ending in -eu, -au, and -eau, an -x is added to form the plural.

  • Un jeu → des jeux (A game → games)
  • Un chapeau → des chapeaux (A hat → hats)
  • Un bateau → des bateaux (A boat → boats)
