A2.1 The imperative sentence

The imperative sentence is used to give an order, make a suggestion, invite someone, or express a request.

Verbs in the imperative

  • Manger : mange (eat), mangeons (let's eat), mangez (eat).
  • Aller : va (go), allons (let's go), allez (go).
  • Faire : fais (do/make), faisons (let's do/make), faites (do/make).
  • Prendre : prends (take), prenons (let's take), prenez (take).
  • Acheter : achète (buy), achetons (let's buy), achetez (buy).

Affirmative form

  • Faire (you): Fais tes devoirs. (Do your homework.)
  • Aller (we): Allons au parc. (Let's go to the park.)
  • Manger (you, plural/formal): Mangez sainement. (Eat healthily.)

Negative form

  • Ne fais pas de bruit. (Don't make noise.)
  • N'y allons pas trop tard. (Let's not go too late.)
  • Ne mangez pas trop vite. (Don't eat too quickly.)

Irregular verb specific to the imperative

The verb "être" (to be) is an example of an irregular verb.

  • Sois prudent. (Be careful.)
  • Ne sois pas inquiet. (Don't be worried.)
  • Soyez à l'heure! (Be on time!)

Attention

In the negative form, "ne" precedes the verb.

  • Ne fais pas ça. (Don't do that.)
  • Ne fais jamais ça. (Never do that.)
  • Ne me parle pas. (Don't talk to me.)
  • N'y va pas. (Don't go there.)
  • N'en achète pas. (Don't buy any.)
