The position of the adverbs souvent (often), beaucoup (a lot), trop (too much), assez (enough), and jamais (never) in a sentence varies depending on the conjugation of the verb. An adverb is placed after a conjugated verb or before an infinitive verb.
After a conjugated verb
In the present indicative, these adverbs are generally placed after the conjugated verb.
Examples
- Il mange souvent au restaurant. (He often eats at a restaurant.)
- Elle travaille beaucoup. (She works a lot.)
- Je parle beaucoup trop. (I talk way too much.)
- Ce sac est assez grand. (This bag is big enough.) (the adverb is placed before the adjective.)
- Il ne sort jamais le soir. (He never goes out at night.)
Before an infinitive
In the near future, these adverbs are placed before the infinitive.
Examples
- Je vais souvent manger au restaurant. (I am going to eat at a restaurant often.)
- Elle va beaucoup travailler demain. (She is going to work a lot tomorrow.)
- Je ne vais pas du tout assez dormir cette nuit. (I am not going to sleep enough at all tonight.)
- Je vais assez bien dormir ce soir. (I am going to sleep well enough tonight.)
- Il ne va jamais sortir le soir. (He is never going to go out at night.)
