A1.3 The Purpose Preposition "Pour" with a Noun, Pronoun, or Verb

The preposition pour is used in French to express the purpose or goal of an action. It can introduce a noun, a pronoun, or an infinitive verb.

Pour followed by a noun or pronoun

When pour is followed by a noun or pronoun, it indicates the objective or the beneficiary of the action.

  • Je lis souvent des romans pour le plaisir. (I often read novels for pleasure.)
  • Il a acheté des fleurs pour sa mère. (He bought flowers for his mother.)
  • Il a acheté des fleurs pour elle. (He bought flowers for her.)
  • Elle fait du bénévolat pour une association. (She volunteers for an organization.)

Pour followed by an infinitive verb

When pour introduces an infinitive verb, it expresses the purpose of the action described by the main verb.

  • Elle économise pour voyager en Asie. (She is saving to travel to Asia.)
  • Nous étudions pour réussir nos examens. (We study to pass our exams.)
  • Il s'entraîne pour courir le marathon. (He is training to run the marathon.)
