Using "avant"
- Avant le dîner, je dois terminer mes devoirs. (Before dinner, I need to finish my homework.)
- Avant Noël, les gens achètent des cadeaux. (Before Christmas, people buy gifts.)
- Avant la réunion, il est important de préparer l'ordre du jour. (Before the meeting, it is important to prepare the agenda.)
Using "après"
- Après le travail, nous allons nous promener. (After work, we go for a walk.)
- Après le déjeuner, j'aime prendre un café. (After lunch, I like to have a cup of coffee.)
- Après cette série, qu'est-ce que tu veux regarder ? (After this series, what do you want to watch?)
Exceptions and points to note
Although avant and après are typically followed directly by a noun, they can also be used with more complex constructions, such as avant de + infinitive or après avoir + past participle, to express a sequence of actions.
- Après avoir mangé, je suis sorti. (After eating, I went out.)
- Avant d'aller au cinéma, nous allons manger dans un café. (Before going to the cinema, we are going to eat in a café.)
