Use of Qui
Qui refers to people or things and functions as the subject of the verb in the relative clause.- L'homme qui parle est mon oncle. (The man who is speaking is my uncle.)
- Le livre qui est sur la table est intéressant. (The book that is on the table is interesting.)
- La personne qui m'a appelé hier est mon ami. (The person who called me yesterday is my friend.)
The phrase C’est… qui
The construction "c'est... qui" is used to emphasize the identity of the subject or to highlight it. It is often used in responses to who questions to specify or underline who is performing the action.
- - Qui a gagné le match ? (Who won the match?)
- C'est l'équipe locale qui a gagné. (It's the local team who won.) - - Qui fait la vaisselle ? (Who is doing the dishes?)
- C'est Paul qui fait la vaisselle. (It's Paul who is doing the dishes.)
