A1.2 Pronouns En and Y

The pronouns en and y are used to replace a noun and to avoid repetition. The pronoun en generally replaces a noun introduced by "de", while y replaces a noun introduced by "à", "dans", "sur", etc.

Examples with the pronoun "en"

  • Tu as un peu d'argent ? Oui, j'en ai. (Do you have a little money? Yes, I have some.)
  • Vous parlez des vacances ? Oui, nous en parlons. (Are you talking about the holidays? Yes, we are talking about them.)
  • Il veut trois pommes ? Oui, il en veut trois. (Does he want three apples? Yes, he wants three.)

Examples with the pronoun "y"

  • Elle pense à son projet ? Oui, elle y pense. (Is she thinking about her project? Yes, she is thinking about it.)
  • Les pommes sont sur la table ? Oui, elles y sont. (Are the apples on the table? Yes, they are there.)
  • Ils vont à l'école ? Oui, ils y vont. (Are they going to school? Yes, they are going there.)
